Aspidistra book7/5/2023 His work is characterised by an opposition to totalitarianism and biting social commentary, and remains influential in popular culture today. Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), more commonly known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English journalist, essayist, critic, and novelist most famous for his novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” (1949) and allegorical novella “Animal Farm” (1945). Brimming with Orwell’s characteristic social criticism, this dark satire will resonate with anyone who has ever suffered from a lack of money or the need to make it, and it is not to be missed by fans of Orwell’s seminal work. Set in London in the 1930s, it revolves around Gordon Comstock and his endeavour to diverge from the worship of money and status, which leads him to a life of mediocrity and unfulfillment. “Keep the Aspidistra Flying” is a 1936 novel by George Orwell.

I’m writing this newsletter in a fury while she takes a rare nap in her crib. It leaves me with very little free time, and I’ve been prioritizing other things. However, she still, almost six months into her little life, wants to be held nearly all day every day, sleeping or waking. It’s a little frustrating because this baby sleeps very well at night (a miracle, my first two didn’t sleep through the night for years) and so I do occasionally feel like I have two brain cells to rub together. I haven’t had much time to write since the baby was born – this is my first substack email since the fall, aside from a little thing I dashed off around Christmas. The baby who has kept me away from the internet lately is almost six months old now and she’s such a dear treasure - a true princess, doted on all day and night by the whole family, including her big brothers. Happy spring, friends! I hope you’re all happy and healthy.

Irving a prayer for owen meany7/5/2023 The second time frame is John's memories of the past: growing up in New Hampshire in the 1950s and 1960s alongside his best friend, Owen Meany. The first time frame is the perspective of John in the present day (1987). The story is narrated in two interwoven time frames. The story is narrated by John Wheelwright, a former citizen of New Hampshire who has become a voluntary expatriate from the United States, having settled in Toronto and taken on Canadian citizenship. A Prayer for Owen Meany, however, follows an independent and separate plot. The main characters of both novels, Owen Meany and Oskar Matzerath, share the same initials as well as some other characteristics, and their stories show some parallels. Grass was a great influence for John Irving, as well as a close friend. The novel is also an homage to Günter Grass's most famous novel, The Tin Drum. According to John's narration, Owen is a remarkable boy in many ways he believes himself to be God's instrument and sets out to fulfill the fate he has prophesied for himself. Published in 1989, it tells the story of John Wheelwright and his best friend Owen Meany growing up together in a small New Hampshire town during the 1950s and 1960s. A Prayer for Owen Meany is the seventh novel by American writer John Irving.

Here's an example of one of the flip poems that I particularly liked:Ī.B: It's amazing to see how different the same words/opinions come off. One of the things I loved in this picture book is that some of the poems feature the "hero/heroine" on one side and the "villain" on the other. When you read it up, with changes allowed only in punctuation and capitalization it is a different poem." When you read a reverso down, it is one poem. But what if we read them up? That's the question I asked myself when I created the reverso. The first few entries were so witty, I had to go home and read the rest.Īt the end of the book, Marilyn Singer states, "We read most poems down a page. I actually purchased Mirror Mirror sometime last year because it combined interesting poetry techniques with fairytales. The winners are chosen because they "combined literary merit with kid appeal." Yesterday, Mirror Mirror won the 2010 Cybils Award in the Poetry division. |
