Inventions inspire both alarm and wonder trips to the cinema baffle the residents of Macondo when actors who have died in one film “reappear alive” in another, and they are outraged to learn that the projector is “a machine of illusions”. Maths and physics are often presented as stranger than the novel’s supernatural events. A good portion of the first chapter comprises descriptions of the workings of astrolabes and telescopes on a world that “is round, like an orange”. If I wanted to go further down this line, I would have to define what is real and what is magical – and frankly I wouldn’t fancy my chances, especially since this novel so cleverly blurs the boundaries between those concepts.įrom the start of One Hundred Years of Solitude, there are several reminders of the tangible material world. The bonds between a mother and her child are about as real as anything can be, aren’t they?īut I’m entering slippery territory. The famous account of the trickle of José Arcadios’ blood seeking out his mother resonates because it’s embedded in such recognisable emotions. He’s right to point out that even the most overtly magical passages in the book contain plenty that might also be termed real.

Snow crash author stephenson7/8/2023 review of Quicksilver & The Confusion. The official Web site for Neal Stephenson.Written as Stephen Bury (with his uncle J. I am still waiting for avatars and the whole 3D experience of the "metaverse" (Internet) as described in this book. Another aspect of the novel that I like is Stephenson's ability to point out what's still physically necessary despite cyberspace - such as couriers and pizza delivery. Now that I'm thinking about it, it is time to get another copy of this book and read it again. I like a lot of what he imagines in the near future. In a lot of ways, this books is more accessible than Neuromancer and probably more technically correct, but then Stephenson is what they call second generation cyberpunk. Hiro Protagonist, a pizza delivery driver/hacker and Y.T., a female skateboarding courier, join forces to find out about a new designer drug that can crash hackers and computers alike. This is another great virtual reality novel, one which I read shortly after Gibson's "sprawl" trilogy. ( Jump over to read reviews of Quicksilver and The Confusion)

Sing you home reviews7/7/2023 Picoult is with the times, and writes through the perspectives of Zoe, Vanessa, and Max for a polished work. Several current social issues combined into one with Sing You Home: divorce, gay rights and relationships, Christianity, definitions of “family,” and gender roles. After Zoe and Vanessa, now married, decide to have a baby, they realize that they must join battle with Max, who objects on both religious and financial grounds.Īs usual, Picoult shares an exquisitely compelling story by taking a controversial topic and creating layers of complication that grips the heart and questions moral and ethical issues. Though the former couple went quite separate ways, their fates remained entangled: After veering into alcoholism, Max is saved in multiple senses by his fundamentalist conversion Zoe, for her part, finds healing relief in music therapy and the friendship, then romantic love with Vanessa, her counselor. One miscarriage too many spelled the end of Max and Zoe Baxter’s marriage.

And a chance to observe him for a moment. A chance, however flimsy, to gather herself and her exposed nerves. He was standing facing away from her, talking to someone, so hadn’t noted her arrival and she was glad of the respite. Impossible to miss him he would draw the eye of anyone with a pulse. Taking a deep breath, she didn’t move aside, much as she wanted to, but pushed the revolving door and stepped into the warm foyer. The cold wind whistled around her exposed legs but couldn’t shock her out of the stupor that seemed to have taken control of her body.Ī couple clambered out of a cab on the street just behind her and, in a flurry of doormen, luggage and broken German on the cuttingly cold breeze, she knew she had to move into the lobby just behind the glass or move aside and let them pass. Her head ached where pins held the thick mass of curls on top of her head and, with a visibly trembling hand, she pulled the too short mac more tightly around her body. Her heart was in her mouth, legs shaking, hands clammy and a trickle of sweat ran down her back. MAGGIE HOLLAND stood just on the other side of the revolving door, the late November darkness throwing the glittering lights of the exclusive London hotel into sharp relief.
